RACE is a national clearinghouse for the approval of continuing education providers and their programs. All RACE-approved providers and programs are listed on this website. Providers voluntarily apply to the RACE program and agree to abide by the RACE Standards. AAVSB does not solicit participation in the RACE program. |

RACE Acceptance
Individual jurisdictions retain their right to refuse, partially or in full, any provider or program that RACE approves based on their regulation(s). Veterinary continuing education is not standardized among state veterinary boards, each maintains its own requirements.
RACE-approved continuing education is recognized by most AAVSB Member Boards; however providers and participants should verify recognition with their board(s) and should be aware that some boards have limitations on the number of hours accepted in certain categories and/or restrictions of certain methods of delivery of continuing education.
Please contact the veterinary regulatory agencies for specific clarifications and to see if your program will meet their criteria for continuing education. Rules and regulations are constantly reviewed and/or updated and changes take awhile to become effective.
The RACE program reviews and approves programs but does not “accredit” them. Additionally, RACE approves contact hours/credit hours, not CEUs (continuing education units).
RACE Standards
Click here to view the RACE Standards document (PDF) in its entirety; see below for topic-specific links. Please note that Program and Provider approval requires agreement to ALL of the RACE Standards.
RACE Approval: AAVSB may refuse to issue, refuse to renew, deny or approve Approved Provider and/or Program status for cause determined by AAVSB. Providers affected by such decisions may utilize the RACE internal appeal process upon written request received at the AAVSB offices.
Privacy Statement: Application materials submitted are confidential, subject to disclosure with the Association as necessary to comply with the assessment criteria, and to AAVSB Member Boards, upon request. In the review of applications, AAVSB reserves the right to seek expert advice from external sources as deemed necessary by the RACE Committee.
Frequently Asked Questions
For Participants:
Q: How do I know if a program will be considered as acceptable continuing education for re-licensure in my state?
A: States retain their right to refuse, partially or in full, any program that RACE approves as per their particular state regulation(s). We strongly advise participants to check with their state board to verify that a given program is applicable to their re-licensure. Click here to find contact information for all AAVSB-member regulatory agencies.
Q. How many hours of continuing education are required for license renewal?
A. Veterinary continuing education is not standardized among state veterinary boards and each maintains their own requirements. You should check with your state board to verify the number of hours required for your licensure. Click here to find contact information for all AAVSB-member regulatory agencies.
For Providers:
Q: I'm a RACE-approved Provider. Does this mean that my CE programs are automatically approved?
A. No. You must submit a RACE Program Application for any program(s) for which you seek RACE approval. Provider approval does not guarantee Program approval.
Q: May I submit a Program Application if I am not a RACE-approved Provider?
A: No. The RACE Standards stipulate that only RACE-approved Providers may submit Programs for approval. You may submit a Provider AND Program Application(s) simultaneously. Click here to learn more about becoming a RACE-approved Provider.
Q: May I submit a Program Application for a program that I've previously offered?
A. No. Programs cannot be retroactively reviewed or approved after-the-fact. It is preferable that you submit an application at least 45 days in advance of the first course offering to ensure that the review process can be completed and any potential issues addressed before the program begins. This also ensures that your participants can attain their certificates of attendance in a timely fashion.
Q: How many copies should we submit with our application (for both Provider AND Program Applications)?
A: For paper applications, please submit three collated sets of all materials to the AAVSB RACE Office, 4106 Central, Kansas City, MO, 64110. For online submissions, please mail one complete set to the AAVSB RACE Office for our files.
Q: When are letters of recommendation required?
A: For Provider Applications: Organizations requesting Provisional Provider Status must submit three letters of reference from individuals who can support the organization's ability to coordinate continuing education, maintain adequate CE records, and present programs which meet the RACE Standards. Click here to learn more about Provisional Provider Status.
For Program Applications, letters of recommendation may be requested at the discretion of the RACE Committee for presenters who do not have board certification, advanced degrees and/or evidence of special knowledge in the subject area being presented. Click here to learn more about speaker qualifications, and to view a sample reference form that may be utilized.
Q: Under what circumstances must we submit a post test?
A: Any program that is considered self-study or non-interactive, e.g. online or pre-recorded programs, must utilize an evaluation and testing mechanism for awarding CE, per the RACE Standards. Providers are required to submit a sample post-test, including a description of the testing and design and the test writer's qualifications, along with the Program Application. Certificates of Attendance may only be presented to participants scoring 70% or better on the post-test. Click here to learn more about Methods of Delivery.
Q: On the Program Application, what is the difference between "number of total contact hours available" and "maximum number of contact hours of CE for any ONE [individual]"?
A: In some circumstances, a program may offer more contact hours than any one individual may complete in a given period, such as conferences that have multiple tracks. Such a conference may have 45 hours available from which an individual may choose 8 hours of programming, for instance. In that case, the "number of total contact hours available" would be 45, and the "maximum number of contact hours of CE for any ONE veterinarian" would be 8. Per hour fees are calculated for the total contact hours AVAILABLE. Click here to view a sample Program Application with this scenario.
Q: How long does the review process take?
A: The review process typically takes 3-4 weeks. You will be contacted via email once the review has been completed.
