The CA Veterinary Medical Board has agreed that AAVSB will be its designated agent and that AAVSB will “evaluate the qualifications of candidates who apply to take the NAVLE and will determine the eligibility of each candidate to do so.” AAVSB’s responsibilities are limited to eligibility determinations related to the NAVLE, and AAVSB will only act as agent when the CA Veterinary Medical Board has entered into a contract with the National Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners (NBVME), whereby the NBVME will provide qualified candidates with access to the North American Veterinary Licensing Examination (NAVLE) and that AAVSB is recognized as an agent.
The CA Veterinary Medical Board determines licensure eligibility based upon statutory criteria. AAVSB has undertaken and is assessing candidate qualifications for eligibility to sit for the NAVLE. AAVSB determines qualifications of candidate eligibility by assessing that candidates have either graduated from an accredited school or are within 8 months of graduation. AAVSB will either verify such candidate is in good standing within the school and within 8 months of graduation, or alternatively, in receipt of a certified set of transcripts indicating graduation from an accredited school. With regard to foreign educated/trained candidates, AAVSB will ensure successful completion of the Qualifying Examination (QE) of the AAVSB Program for the Assessment of Veterinary Education Equivalence (PAVE) or has completed and is in receipt of a certificate from the American Veterinary Medical Association Educational Commission for Foreign Veterinary Graduates (ECFVG) program.
This is for applicants who would like to register for the NAVLE through California.
NOTE: ECFVG candidates may NOT apply for the NAVLE eligibility through California. All other states accept applications from ECFVG candidates.
Application for the NAVLE through California is a two step process:
1)
You must complete the application for Eligibility Review listed below.
Deadline: July 31, 2009
Request Form and Guidelines for ADA Accommodations for the NAVLE (PDF)
Accommodations requests must be post-marked by the application deadline. Requests must include complete and thorough supporting documentation.
2)
You also must complete the NAVLE application through the NBVME. It is available at www.nbvme.org now. The NBVME NAVLE application deadline for the Fall 2009 testing window is August 1, 2009.
NAVLE results are now available! They are posted here for California-approved candidates ONLY. Hard copy score reports will be mailed.
NAVLE results will be accessible online until May 22, 2009. You must know your NAVLE ID number in order to view your score. You should’ve recently received an email from the NBVME with that information in it.
If you failed the exam, you must re-apply for eligibility through CA, as well as complete the National Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners’ application. Both applications will be available online in early June.

Results are available through AAVSB for California-approved candidates ONLY. AAVSB forwards the NAVLE results to the California Veterinary Medical Board, so a score transfer is NOT necessary.
