1 Task: Review exam information and dates

  • Be sure you read the Candidate Handbook for the entire VTNE policy regarding:
    • refunds
    • withdrawing/cancellations
    • rescheduling
    • test day requirements
    • ID requirements - name changes
    • absences
    • score reporting
  • The VTNE is a 3-hour exam which consists of 170 multiple-choice questions. Your score on the VTNE is based on responses to 150 operational questions. The additional 20 pilot questions embedded in the test are used for constructing future examinations and will not count toward your final score.
    • The VTNE is offered in both English and French.
  • You'll pay $330 USD by credit card when you submit your online application. The AAVSB accepts

2 Task: Request Testing Accommodations

  • If you are requesting accommodations, please refer to the eligibility requirements for your state in Step #1, Task 1, Verify Your Eligibility.
  • Accommodation requests and supporting documentation that will be reviewed by the AAVSB are due by the posted VTNE online application deadline.

3 Task: Apply using an alternate path

  • Submit your VTNE online application by the application deadline.
    • Select the jurisdiction that will review your alternate path for VTNE eligibility.
    • Verify you have met that state or province’s eligibility and application requirements.
    • This jurisdiction will automatically get your official VTNE Score Report after the exam.
  • After your passing score is posted, if you are seeking credentials in a different jurisdiction, submit a VAULT transfer request to send your score and credential record to your state or provincial credentialing agency.

4 Task: Submit your online application

  • No refunds will be made after the VTNE online application/refund deadline. Eligibility cannot be transferred to a future exam window.
    • You must take the exam during the exam window for which you apply or you may forfeit exam fees.
  • The first and last name on the VTNE online application must match the first and last name of your government issued, unexpired, photo ID with signature, that you will use on exam day. Email vettech@aavsb.org if this is a concern.
  • The application deadline is NOT a processing or scheduling deadline.
  • Allow 2-3 weeks for initial application processing which will activate your MyAAVSB account.
